very helpful. I take alot of photos of fairly large trucks down here in Australia and im forever walking backwards to get the shots but i dont want to lose the truck in the background. I'll probably buy this lense and see how it goes with the trucks if not it will be great for the MASSVIE holiday coming up next year! Thanks for the review!

Hello Gordon. I'm thinking of buying either this Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS lens or the Canon EF 28-135mm IS. How different are the two of them considering the angle of view (also taking into account that I used Tamron 18-200 mm f3.5-6.3 Di-II XR and I would not wont a shorter angle of view; I must add that I don't need that big focal length of the tamtom higher than 100, is not much of a use for me). So...will I loose or gain angle of view by replacing the tamrom with the Canon EF-S 17-85 IS?

hey gordon currently ive purchased a canon 30D and off a friend and i got a 28-80mm lens with it, however ive had my eye on the 17-85 considering how wider angle i am able to get, although i hear similiar pros for both cameras and not taht many distinctive cons...should i upgrade? or decide to save up for a macro lens or something a bit more different?

Well as said it makes them very easy to understand so it's a good thing. Robot maybe was not a good choice of words of mine. I couldnt make up my mind if I liked it or not though. Thinking about it a little bit I prefer your videos over most anybody elses. By the way I once bought the Rebel XS based on your recommendation and and am still thrilled by how much I learned about photography using it. It was my first DSLR so now I probably will upgrade it to the 5D MII, but great recommendation.

Gordon Lanes videos are great. Whay I wonder about though is he really sounds like a robot. Like every video it is the same text he just fills in the blanks for each product. On the other hand it is very helpful because after seeing 2 or 3 of his videos you understand the others much easier. I just wonder if he does it on purpose or not.

@anime1213 - As a professional photographer, and based on your comment, give the Kodak cameras a try. Try the Z981 EasyShare, it's a bargain, and will not take super nice photos and video. When traveling with my family, I never lug my heavy professional equipment around, and many of the photos actually compare with professional stuff.

Yes x (times) the image seen on the optic nerve.. so field binoculars for example are generally 7-10x.. field telescopes generally range up to about 60x the size you see with the naked eye. I'm surprised you say it's maximum 3.2x - looks like more in the video : ( I guess this is why pro wildlife photographers have these camera .4 meter lenses. If it's only 3.2 then you still need to get reasonably close to the subject 9if it's for example a bird or small mammal)

James, the question is 15 times what exactly? If you're meaning 15 times the standard magnification of the human eyey, then that starting point is approximately 50mm equivalent. Since this lens when zoomed-in is equivalent to 88mm, then its maximum magnification is about 1.76 times. The actual total of the zoom range though is 55 divided by 17, which equals 3.2x.

As someone who has a lot of expereince with telescopes and other optics I am wondering what the equivalent magnification of the image would be on full zoom? I've been unable to find anyone able to answer this question so far but I can't understand why.. it's a simple prime number. Many binoculars are around 10x telescopes g from 15x - 40x or more. How does this fit with the numbers on a zoom lens? Anyone able to pick this?

@strong6230 Probably picture quality, the 28-135 has less elements, and also makes it less probable to have less quality than the 18-200, more elements also means that the lenses (elements) can be of a lower quality, especially when you are not using an L series lens, such as the 24-105. But the 18-200mm is still a good deal because it has both telephoto and wide angle properties.

I dont really like this lens, picture quality isnt that great. I preffer using either the EF-S 17-85mm or the 17-40mm L series. Then, I probably tell my dad the let me use his 100-400mm or the 70-200mm with the 2x addon. I love wide angle lenses, I barely need to use telephoto lenses, actually the 85mm is more than enough for me with my camera's 1.6x crop factor.

@qrgfey Its hard to me to tell some one to go out and buy a camera because it more than just reccomending one. Best bet is to go and get hands on with a few camea bodies to see which will suite you best, also consider features like HD video? if you dont want that then the model below will be a better buy. A Few Tips.. 1.Set a budget. 2. Chose a feature set (video etc) and no mega pixcels dont really matter. 3. Try a few different cameras and make your choice. Hope this helps. Rick

@Platform2Adventure You can verify if you have the same issue to test if it's working without err99 at maximum aperture (as barry2718 wrote). I recently did another 17-85 and when installing a complete new aperture unit it took me about one hour to get it all working again. In fact, you don't need to remove the front lens element. I did this to remove some dust which is inevitable. Dust won't effect your images, fingerprints can. It indeed involves a litte more than fixing a mobile.

@carvedphoenix These rollers are screwed in the so called 'power diaphragm' unit and the IS unit, three in each. For as long I can remember you only need to remove those six rollers. After you removed the screws you can lift them out using a small screwdriver or a small pair of pliers. Although the slide show video shows how to remove also the front element, it's not necessary to remove it. If you have done it, make sure you put it back in the same way otherwise it might not focus well.

My EFS 17-85mm Is failed this weekend. After tested it at all zoomed I found everything worked at 28mm only. Alternately I could use the lens in manual with wide open aperture only. I've got the circuit board off at the back of the lens and can clearly see the broken ribbon cable to the EOS aperture. At 17mm the cable has a clear break line and at longer lengths the stress on the bend is acceptable but the damage is done.... This is a design fault and I'm disgusted. My lens is 3 years old.

@carvedphoenix I didn't got them from Canon because I assume they only sell to business. On ebay there are a few shops where they sell canon eos parts, I bought a set of two cables from procamerarepair. While replacing the cable please make sure you do not overheat the contacts of the aperture unit. The tiny wires to the coils break very easily. Auto focus can fail or start hunting with a broken aperture cable. If it's only the cable, the lens will operate without errors only at max aperture.

Yes it normally will, but with this lens warranty time was already passed. I replaced the aperture unit myself, in fact only the cable attached to it. If the lens had been in its warranty period I would not put my screwdriver in it. :-)

Great Video.. I have a Tamron 17-50 2.8 but the principle is the same. My camera was back focusing after a fall. I have calibrated the lens based in your video. Great stuff.!!! however is not yet perfect. the lens is to the maximum calibration point. Is there a calibration for the Camera as well? any clue where to look.? I have my screwdriver ready!

Now my 17-55 is as clean as new and I love it. Thanks for taking the time to post this. I'd like to contribute as well. 1. Did not pry the seal up from the lens side. Used a paper clip end in the small hole in the outer seal and it pried right up. 2. My lens element did not fall out when I turned it over. Canon cleaned it once and they used a gum to secure it as well as the seal ring. I had to insert a small hook into the slotted hole ends and slowly pry it up. Worked all 3 slots evenly.

Thanks for the video, I did it today. there are some lenses that suck dust as a vacuum, while others don't... today before I proceeded to clean my lens, I checked it out in full light, and found that the front seal (where it says Canon yada yada yada) was not centered and left a little space for dust to come in, so after I cleaned it tried to better center it at the final reasembly. Let's see how it turns out, but alreadysticked the UV filter again, Canon should use a second seal.

Couple of thoughts: 1. Do it only if you are good at these sort of things. 2. Make sure your small phillips screwdriver is the right size...the screw heads are eaisly stripped. 3. AT ALL COSTS, MARK AND ENSURE YOU PUT THE ELEMENT BACK IN THE EXACT SAME PLEASE WINCE IT CAME. If you don't then you will affect the infinity focus.

I used a Fuji bridge for years and found the EOS 500D a step back in many ways. I spent £700+ on a decent kit only to have less zoom, more focusing noise, a range of completely useless lenses like the ones reviewed above and confusion over the utterly pointless EF-S standard. The Canon Digital Photo Professional software is the worst I've ever used... oh, and I gotta pay £20 extra for a tulip hood. Canon must be raking it in.

Thanks for the comparison, im looking for some advice, im seeking to buy a Canon 550D for both Photography and Film purposes and im becoming more convinced that i should buy a upgrade lens instead of buying the average kit lens 18-55 it comes with. Hi Gordon, I own the 18-55 kit lens and having error 99, so I am thinking to get a new lens and your video helps a lot in giving me ideas which 1 to buy. I did some research about putting EF and L lenses on crop sensor camera. For canon its 1.6X so I am wondering if let say i purchase a EF lens or a L lens do we divide the focal length by 1.6 as well? And today kit lens already have IS built in and I find it hard to find suitable replacement. Im also get addicted with the IS and I think I have to find lens with stabilization built in. @823kaji well for zoom u'll need a bigger range of focal length, 200 mm or 300 mm will be great, but as u stated ur a beginner i'd reccomend starting with the 18-55 and upgrade when u know ur way around the camera. my 2 cents

Auch ich darf die 7D mein Eigenen nennen, hier nun das erste richtige Video, naja, ein paar Minuten eben. Nichts besonderes das weiß ich, muss noch viel testen und lesen und erfahren :P Angefangen von der besten Einstellung bis hin zum Video bearbeiten/exportier en. Habe nun mit dem Format ".mov" das beste Ergebnis erzielt - Video wurde 166MB groß - villt weiß ja jemand noch was besseres :P

Ja, die Roh-Datei direkt von der Cam - die sind rießig, .. meinte mit den 166MB die Datengröße die das Video nach dem Bearbeiten (nach dem Export) hatte^^ Roh-Dateien sind ziemlich Groß.. 6 Min = 2 GB, also stimmt deine info!
